The Ordinary Brand is Nothing Less Than Extraordinary

The Ordinary Brand is Nothing Less Than Extraordinary

We’re calling it now: The Ordinary is the hottest upcoming skincare brand that you need to know about.

The brand was first brought to our attention because of its strong cult-like status on the MakeUp Addiction and Skin Care Addiction subreddits. Users recently began posting major hauls that consisted of five to ten products at a time, all with practically glowing reviews.

But the best part? The prices are outrageously good for the utmost in quality.

We’re talking only $9.80 for their anti-aging Advanced Retinoid, $6.70 for the Caffeine Solution (to help reduce eye puffiness and fine lines) and only $6.80 for their latest Vitamin C Suspension. At these prices, it only makes sense to make your entire skincare routine Ordinary 💁
Personally, I bought the Advanced Retinoid to see what the hype is all about. So far, after only two nights of use, I feel like I’ve noticed a difference already. And on a personal note, I’m having a strangely hormonal outbreak this week (!!) but I feel like the retinoid has helped my skin calm down when my typical skincare routine didn’t.

My experience has been so positive with the brand so far that I have added four more products to my cart to order: the Salicylic Acid Solution, the Vitamin C Suspension, the Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, and the High-Adherence Silicone Primer. The price tag for all four of these amazing products is only $22.40!
Now’s the time to get in with the brand, too. Due to recently high volume of orders, they’re backlogged to about 10 days additional shipping time.

And no, I wasn’t paid to write this review 😉 But when there’s a brand that’s this effective and wallet-friendly, I just have to spread the good news!

Have you used the products before? Let us know in the comments!

Can’t Decide on Your Personality? Let MAC Do it for You!

Can’t Decide on Your Personality? Let MAC Do it for You!

Define your existence with six new palettes from MAC.

Are you a Basic Bitch? Fulfill your dreams of being a unicorn or a mermaid (or both… are unimermaids trendy now?) with this new palette. With each purchase, a pair of UGGS is donated to a trust-fund baby in need. Tired of being called bossy at work when really, you are the boss? There’s one for you, too! Indulge yourself in the gilded Power Hungry palette. Don’t take it up with HR, express your inner Sheryl Sandberg the only way you know how: through eyeshadow. And there’s one for you, too, Barbie. The Prissy Princess palette comes jam-packed with the only color you’re capable of loving: pink. But don’t you worry, you curious little devil. Let the Mischief Minx palette brings out the sly vixen buried deep inside your psyche. Adorned with leopard packaging, these painfully-average shades show the world that you’re one curious little cat. Not to be forgotten, there’s one for all you fashionistas and rebels. Because hey, what caricature of a woman is complete without these two cornerstones? The Rockin’ Rebel and Fashion Fanatic palettes are available, too. Okay, we’re done now. If you’re looking to purchase one, MAC has all the details here. And in all seriousness, just have fun with it. Who cares?

Can we just say that your makeup preferences don’t have to define you? Or is that obvious and we’re being grumpy because this is such a blatant marketing ploy by MAC? The brand may be a creative vanguard in the cosmetics industry, but this feels a little tone-deaf and forced.

Either way, if you do pick up a palette, let us know. We’re genuinely curious to see the quality and the overall response from the beauty community.

Self Love is Fashionable, Empowering, & Charitable with We Are Enough Co.

“No matter who you are, no matter what you do or how you define yourself, you need to hear this. You need to know that however badly you feel like you’re fucking up, however much you struggle, even when you feel like you’ll never get it right – you are enough. We promise you, you are so enough.”

Founded by a powerhouse girlfriend-boyfriend duo Lauren and Adam, We Are Enough Co. takes a uniquely fashionable approach to communicating a powerful mission of self-love. From coffee mugs to pins, sweatshirts to t-shirts, and patches to tote bags, every piece in a collection donates proceeds of each sale to a designated charity.

The Unapologetic Collection, the brand’s latest, celebrates “inclusivity, intersectionality and the empowerment of women everywhere.” The description for the Empowered Women shirt alone makes you want to rejoice in your femininity and celebrate the strength of sisterhood!

(I need this in my life)

What makes this shirt that much better is the mission behind it: ten percent of the proceeds go straight to the nonprofit Daughters of Eve, whose mission is to eradicate both gender-based violence and female genital mutilation.

For all you coffee lovers and morning-haters, there’s something for you, too. Start your day on a positive note with the signature mug! We can’t think of a more adorable yet empowering way to start the day. A percentage of the profits go to the Leeway Domestic Violence and Abuse Service. In fact, profits from every item sold go to a specific foundation, so rest assured that your money is making a difference no matter what you buy.

How about a little self love with your coffee?

Keep an eye out for more from We Are Enough Co. This is only the beginning for this incredible UK-based brand, and we can’t wait to see (and buy!) what they come up with next.

And yes, I am definitely buying that shirt 😉

YES to this: Girl Scouts Adds 23 New Badges in STEM

YES to this: Girl Scouts Adds 23 New Badges in STEM

This is pretty major. Can you tell we’re excited?

Yesterday, the Girl Scouts of the USA introduced 23 new merit badges for their members to earn.

These new badges include options like Programming Robots and Racecar Design in collaboration with tech-focused groups like Code.org, SciStarter, GoldieBlox, and others.

Girl Scouts previously announced badge offerings like Website Design and Cybersecurity, so it’s really encouraging to see the foundation expanding into additional STEM areas. Granted, Dinner Party and Simple Meal badges are still offered, but rounding out interests like this and showing young girls that these are all viable career options is what we should be focusing on.

Share the good news with the Girl Scout in your life!

Jimmy Choo is worth like, a lot.

Jimmy Choo is worth like, a lot.

It was announced today that Michael Kors has agreed to buy Jimmy Choo for an outstanding $1.2 billion dollars.

That’s a lot of high heels.

The premium/luxury fashion industry has been feeling pretty daring this year. This latest buy comes hot off the heals of Coach’s announcement to buy Kate Spade for a very pretty, quirky penny.

But don’t expect for the brand to change it’s aesthetics. Known for its strappy stilettos, handbags, perfume, and additional accessories, Jimmy Choo has definitely discovered what works and what doesn’t for the brand. Michael Kors knows this, too. They’ve announced that they’ll keep the existing JC management team, so expect to see the same swoon-worthy designs during this massive transition!

To The Bone: Triggering, Pandering, or Resonating?

To The Bone: Triggering, Pandering, or Resonating?

The new movie To The Bone debuts on Netflix today.

Starring Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves, it documents a young 20-year-old’s struggle with anorexia nervosa.

The movie was inspired by Lily’s real struggle with the eating disorder, and she revealed her personal journey with anorexia during the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this January. Many social media critics have voiced their concerns about the film, claiming that it glorifies eating disorders and the effects that it has on one’s body. Many are even calling for it to be banned from Netflix because it glamorizes the disease and shows methods on how to lose weight unhealthily.

Here at News Macarons, we take this topic seriously. And we believe that every body, every woman, is naturally beautiful. We’ve even interviewed an amazing, inspirational woman about her journey with overcoming this disease and you can read it here!

So we want to know, will you be watching this movie?
Do you think it’s triggering, pandering, or resonating with the current culture?

Project Runway (finally) Makes It Work For All

Project Runway (finally) Makes It Work For All

“Make it work, designers!”

You’ve all probably heard Tim Gunn’s famous tagline. And now, it finally applies to women of all shapes and sizes.

Project Runway just announced that Season 16, premiering August 17 on Lifetime, will be using models of all shapes and sizes ranging from 0-22 for the competition. This is a big deal because it’s the first time the show has embraced diverse models. On previous seasons, model diversity was only represented by the “real woman challenge.” Come on, that’s obviously pandering.

But last year, Tim Gunn made headlines when he wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post claiming that the fashion industry “turned its back on plus-size women.”

Seriously, how amazing is this? Sure, it could’ve happened earlier. But it’s the progress that counts.
We’re excited to tune in to the show!

Your Favorite Mall Retailers are Going Bankrupt

Your Favorite Mall Retailers are Going Bankrupt

RIP: your favorite mall retailers. It looks like 2017 won’t be so kind.

You can expect nearly 10,000 nationwide store closings from the likes of Macy’s, Sears, JC Penney, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ralph Lauren, BCBG, The Limited, and even True Religion.

In fact, the store closings are so wide spread that the number of store closings is up 53% from that of the Great Recession in 2008. You can blame the rise of e-commerce, lack of adaptability, and less-than-desirable-merchandise for the trend.

Known for their preference of spending money more on experiences than stuff, millennials are being blamed for these dramatic shifts as well (of course 🙄).

Take a look at the graphic below to see how many store closuress to expect in the coming year!

At only 14 years old, she won the Ladies European Thailand Championship on Sunday. Despite this record-shattering win, Atthaya is still considered an amateur and is not eligible for the 45,000 euros prize money. Instead, this goes to the runner-up, Mexico’s Ana Menendez.

But this is still a major accomplishment for the young teen, who told reporters that her win “makes me feel very happy and so proud of myself. This trophy, I give to Thailand and the Thai People.”

how much are you willing to spend in the name of feminism?

how much are you willing to spend in the name of feminism?

Dior recently released some promotional images featuring Jennifer Lawrence wearing the brand’s iconic “We Should All Be Feminists” shirt. It’s the same one that launched in September of last year and became an instant hit. J-Law is an outspoken feminist, and we love her for it, but we’re sceptical if Dior is genuinely supporting the movement, or just in it for the money. Actually, we’re 99.99997% confident that they’re just in it to capitalize on the cause- because the shirt is $710. Yes, you read that correctly. Dior is a luxury brand, so a hefty price is to be expected, but how can a brand ask “everyone” to support the cause while almost “no one” can afford that kind of price tag? Let us know what you think!

Yes, you can buy it here. Images courtesy of Dior.

Was the show GIRLBOSS empowering?

Was the show GIRLBOSS empowering?

Okay, confession. We had to change the title of this post from is to was because, as we were typing it, the news broke that GIRLBOSS was canceled.

So how do we feel about this? Originally, this post was meant to see if any of you found the show empowering, or if it served its purpose to both inspire young women to pursue their dreams and to entertain a larger audience simultaneously. But after the show’s cancelation due to lukewarm reception and disapproving reviews, we think there’s something more here.

Here at news macs, we weren’t thrilled with the show as a whole. Sophia’s character, played by Britt Robertson, was so unlikable that it retracted our attention away from the purpose of the namesake book. What was originally a biography about discovering strength despite your unusual beginnings, the trials you may go through, or the gifts you were given at birth, its fundamental message was that you can succeed in this crazy world as long as you stay true to yourself.

And it seems as though Sophia Amoruso is circling back to this philosophy herself. The news broke this weekend when Sophia declared on her Instagram story that her show was no more, and she stated that “While I’m proud of the work we did, I’m looking forward to controlling my narrative from here on out.” Perhaps this show has more of a relatable story now than it did at launch: stay true to yourself and your narrative.

Thoughts?

Benazir Bhutto: Women to Know

On December 2, 1988 Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan, the first democratically-elected female leader of a Muslim country.

The daughter of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) founder and Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Bhutto took over as chairperson of the PPP in 1982. After her two terms as Prime Minister ended early amid charges of corruption, Bhutto spent eight years in exile in London.  In 2008 she returned to Pakistan with plans to participate in the 2008 general election.

After a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, a gunman fired at her car before detonating a bomb which killed himself and more than 20 bystanders. Bhutto was rushed to the hospital, but died shortly after. The loss of the country’s most popular democratic leader brought on rioting throughout the country.

When she started treatment again, she lost her eyebrows, like many others. And it was through writing about her experience that she was approached by Volition Beauty to help create faux eyebrows for those who might need them. The prototypes are now finished, and 30% of sales will benefit the Ulman Cancer Fund.

Deanna is pretty incredible, stating “the possibility that this could bring that sort of comfort to some else is, to me, priceless.”
